WHERE'S THE REASON

by Mark Maxey

I’m up against a wall
and it’s closing in around me
suffocation seems enevitable
just wrap it up in a big blue ball
when will we open our eyes and see

politicians get elected by their words
they represent the masses as a tool
but they don’t seem to listen to our voice
the dollar bill speaks louder from the lobbyists

I was in dallas the other night
Too many homeless roam the streets
All begging for my change
I wonder when it will ever change

I’m up against a wall
and it’s closing in around me
suffocation seems enevitable
just wrap it up in a big blue ball
when will we open our eyes and see

hustle and bustle of the cars
running in masses like sardines
buying this new fashion
as if they will fix the crimes

today’s music seems to be rhetoric
where has the poets gone who had the message
I hear them occasionally but
they seem to be drowned out by societies banter

I’m up against a wall
and it’s closing in around me
suffocation seems enevitable
just wrap it up in a big blue ball
when will we open our eyes and see

young boys and girls not old enough to be parents
are coming home inside the pine boxes
fighting wars that may have been avoided
why do they do the dirty work
and come home to be planted?

I’m up against a wall
and it’s closing in around me
suffocation seems enevitable
just wrap it up in a big blue ball
when will we open our eyes and see

the stress of the days gets our attention
when we divert our attention to the screen
laughter fills our hearts and our eyes close down
forgetting the reason why we are here

another day goes by
another baby is born
another day passes with no action
and I wonder how long it will last

I’m up against a wall
and it’s closing in around me
suffocation seems enevitable
just wrap it up in a big blue ball
when will we open our eyes and see
