Where Did You Go?

by Alison McKenzie

Where you went, I can’t follow
But I need to see you
In your red skin
And your moccasins.
Where is your pipe?
Do you have your feathers?
Did you leave any medicine?
Are you happy?
Did you meet Creator?
What have you found?

Their white bible would surely sentence you to hell
The Good Red Road not the Christian way and all...
But I know you’re not there.
You can’t be in a place that isn’t
And the only map I have
Doesn’t list Hell
Anywhere
But where we already are.

Grandmother, I miss you.
I neglected your last days
Brevity’s ignorance
Hampering the new growth
Irrelevant rain falls from
My dark eyes
While my soul gropes to find you.
