the rhythm of heartbreak

by Karen Michelle

The world was fused
under eruption of
fireworks.

You broke through
my defences with
the softness of a smile,
a downward glance.

My heart stopped here -
beat...
beat...
falter -
and in the instant
of miscommunicating voices,
I caught your eye
and heard oceans.

We sensed mutual weakness;
attraction hidden beneath
the blush of cheeks,
sweaty palms.

But these moments were
severed.

We were torn
without a whisper
of reason...

I awoke
to the guilt
of silence
