Candle Burning Black ~ Tomorrow Turning Back

by Shonda Creemer

I
my eyes are awake
but remarkably they remain
forever closed
sewn shut

with vision unclear
the words appear
from many silent spoken phrases
the only sound I perceive
is my own empty cry

II
as I sit inside your
candle burning
the flames somehow don’t
touch me
protected by my tears
and letters of you

you drift about
outside
a cold useless stare
bites at my soul
running from the edges
of the damned

you are one
alone
within eternity

grasping for all
but none
of my insanity

III
now I am consumed
by your uncaring flames
scorching my yesterday
hurting my today
burning my tomorrow

nothing last forever
it’s too long
I’m gone

IV
and you
floating there in regret
holding out your powerful hands

begging for your forgiveness
paying for my life
dying as our love is turning black

V
don’t worry
it doesn’t hurt anymore
our last wishes to each unfulfilled

lust smothered the candle
all too sudden
all too late
