The Last Banana/E=MTsquares

by Laura Doom

"Oh! How cruel!"
"?!?"
"You've eaten the last banana..."
"Ah! Mea culpa - but in my defence, I wasn't to know that I should have ascribed feelings to that particular banana."
"?!?"
"Hmm...of course, all banana's have feelings, but the last also bears the suffering of those consumed before?"
"No! Cruel to me!"
"Oh - sorry. You craved the last banana? So, not only cruel, but also unforgiveably selfish of me!"
"Well - yes."
"So - why didn't you eat it? It was there for days."
"I thought you might want it."
"I did - that's why I ate it."
"Yes, and I could have done the same - but I was thinking of you."
"So - should we both have resisted the temptation and left it there to rot?"
"Well, no...I just didn't want to be the one who ate the last banana."
"That's ok then, you weren't - and as I remember, it was you that ate the penultimate banana - have I got that wrong?"
"Er - no..."
"So - wasn't that a greater act of cruelty? Leaving us both with an excruciating predicament?"
"Oh! I guess, maybe - I hadn't thought of it like that..."
"No worries - problem sorted. I can live with the guilt."
"Yes, right - and I'll try to remember, the next time I buy bananas, to break the last one off and leave it for someone else to deal with."
"Hmm...yeh - ok, whatever. Fancy a game of chess?"

...

Bizarre - some people are incredibly myopic.
They just don't see it...
though I have to admit
if I had my time again
the last banana would be mine.
Any sacrifice to avoid
humiliation
at chess.

absolutely superb. thank you for posting it. pleasantly Robert Rankin type feel to it. i could almost imagine the banana conversation being about the last drops of Omally's potato wine in the shed on his allotment. anyway.

*arches her brow, chuckling.* it's interesting because both sections could stand on their own, yet are still complimented when coupled. the concise, short jab that makes up the final lines is what makes me smile. i love endings, they make writing a beginning worth it. more to come.

quick sub-thought: perhaps the last few lines could be seperated from the rest? hm. then again, it stands out regardless... however, i feel it is the crux. hm. yes, yes, again: more to come.
