The Falling Down Song

by Lisa Marie Brodsky

What she’s walked through today may not be her path tomorrow. Because she’s fallen, the sidewalk has cracked, the cracks have yawned open, yawning like a cat, a cat like a held-down being, held down like a head under water.

Say she’s a love-struck fool and thinks nothing is wrong with the day. She feels young, yet somehow startled. What’s just around the corner hits her, hits her like her father after an accident, the dropping of glass, and she knows what’s around the corner can hold a head under water.

But just because she’s fallen her fate is not determined. Mistakes can seal up, days pass like marigolds along a highway, highway like a road, like a sidewalk one can always trip over, like lifting a head above water, back under, then above again.
