ROUGHER TIMES

by Mark Maxey

I’ve seen rougher times
as when the yard erupted in fights
two men lay dying and our hearts
were in our throats
or the time I hit the wall at 60 miles per hour
and both those times I simply walked away
I’m sure of this
at this juncture of my life
I will simply walk away

I’ve seen rougher times
And in the fourth dimension
One can’t always believe their eyes
as this life is merely a passing illusion

tho my body is tired
and the parts aren’t working quite right
it’s my mental thoughts and actions
those determine how the fourth will play out
the bases my be loaded
but I know a good pitch when I see one
and my eyes are on that throw

I’ve seen rougher times
And in the fourth dimension
One can’t always believe their eyes
as this life is merely a passing illusion

I’ve seen rougher times
When things fell apart and I didn’t know why
The parts all spewed out as a gut has been opened
And the reopening disintegrated before my eyes
Thus the time I knew it was good to throw away
Or the time I felt my debt creep higher than I could see
And I am still here functioning as best I can
With a pure heart and drive to show anyone
That this ole boy has got some nerve

I’ve seen rougher times
And in the fourth dimension
One can’t always believe their eyes
as this life is merely a passing illusion
