Treacherous waters

by Amy Niggel

Thoughts swim today
in the liquid fire that is my mind
and the crystal lake that is my memmory.
There you are among them
fighting to swim to shore
as I wish you would drown.
Fade away to the nothingness that you always were
and yet my hand reaches out, unbidden,
and scoops you up from the fray.
I press you to my lips
and hold you close.
Whispering things I know were never true
"It'll be ok"
"We'll always be together"
"I love you"
We were childish
and foolish
as the two shall always be intimate friends of each other.
We should have known better.
I should still know better.
And yet as the sun sets it touches my cheeks
rests on my shoulders,
brushes my hair
and all I think is how beautiful you told told me I was
with the sun setting behind me.
I scoop you up from the treacherous waters of my mind
holding you close once more
and sighing with the memmories of what love felt like.

Nice imagery, nice thoughts. And I like it when people use quotes. Makes everything feel more real, I suppose.
