dead Harold

by Charlie Morgan

dead he is, now;
no more smiles to us living.

but
his grin, ever-exposing
his titanium whites
moves us to love.
and,
the Word pouring out
of his ebony face
as Jesus told him.
so,
he's a sidewalk preacher-man,
saving the world
on his own.
yet,
town-folk embraced distance,
harold had sinned twice,
he was queer and black.
while
a picture adorns
a white man's home,
keeping harold alive
to the living.

Author's Note: Harold, did die,and was a character in a fictional book i had published this past summer. and while it is set in east Texas in 1959 (during segregation), still some of us knew that there is only one race--the human race and so while Harold might have been both queer and Black still his love and message of love got through (to some of us).
