Evince... April 25, 1990

by Mark Maxey

You were to shed light in the darkness
In your majesticness you had become the apogee
journeyed where no man had gone before
you brought us pictures of far away places
it seems now you’re displaced by Huygens
the contretemps of this aspect is horrific

your grander oblation to inquisitive minds was chivalric
efforts of your deeds provided information
digested by the masses
images that were simply magnanimous
but it was all lost
in the vituperation of your de-orbiting
while the news was dulcet to some
for me it was not

you brought the heavens to our eyes
images which danced exotic moods
but…
teenage euthanasia…
decided upon by jejuned dictators
causing a burial at sea

Author's Note: this poem was my response of the following news... "The White House has eliminated funding for a mission to service the Hubble Space Telescope from its 2006 budget request and directed NASA to focus solely on de-orbiting the popular spacecraft at the end of its life, according to government and industry sources."

I think I like this one more than the others, Mark dear.
