OPERA FOR LIFE by Mark MaxeyIn the dullness of the black and gray
We live out our dreams
Masquerading as opera
Disguising our true desire
She sits the scene
Devising her plan
As we play along in unmasked rhyme
Falling into roles all to familiar
For we’ve seen this before
caught up in this craft
we forget we can change direction
living out a Technicolor dream in black and white
fading house lights beckon our arrival
as cattle led to slaughter
falling the ruts of the path
we all know too well
did you ever notice
how we identify our friend with the roles
playing before us
daydream escapes paint the same faces
all to familiar
again the ruts of the path
leads us to the same destination
we mistaking use decorated props
to mask our memories
and in the end we applaud the overture
when it should have been a dirge
for the black and white memories
with Technicolor repeated episodes
