Happy Girl

by Amanda Bullington

Happy Girl, you sing your songs of bliss to me.
At peace with the world,
At peace with yourself.

Happy Girl, you’re what I was waiting for.
The lightness with which to see the world
Shines in your eyes.

But alas; Happy Girl-woe fell upon you
For you met me.
My bitterness seeped into your cheerful smile.

So I sit here, wishing I’d die for you.
Pleading for joy to return to your face,
I try to be happy for your sake.
And I shed my first tears since infancy
On the thought that Happy Girl has left this world.

Happy Girl, you grew old overnight.
Innocence lost, childhood memories lost, happiness lost
Permanently.

Now you are me and I am you
Happy Girl, I stole your happiness.
