Written Tradition

by S. Pelham Flood

Featherlike
you’re floating
on a descent to a hot
bed of Earth—Death.
Each grain of desert sand
is a particle of man…a man (or woman)
who walked this land
before you floated in grace
above it. Your father
may be that grain
you’re about to pounce on
with deft feet
as you make landfall—
or it may be the historical Jesus
…the same one your mother eats
every Sunday at St. John’s Catholic Church…

They say he ascended into heaven
body and soul—
So how can he be the dust
on your newly planted soles?
