count!

by Kalikala Smith

count those fingers
and count those toes
don't wanna have a baby
with not enough of those.
so one, two, three,
and four, five, and six,
and seven, eight, nine, and ten,
and eleven and twelve!
wait there doctor,
are you sure that's right?
"yes," said doc, "its quite absurd,
your daughter reminds me of a bird.
well actually no,
that just happened to rhyme,
your baby has twelve,
of each kind!"
Twelve fingers and toes,
well golly gee,
what can she be?
we could have her play piano,
and bring her all around,
she could be the next best thing in town.
Or maybe we could show her,
on the evening news,
get a good sound bite,
of how we cope with the media abuse.
"Now wait there sir,
don't get carried away,
we're not sure if they work, okay?
We've gotta do tests,
maybe X-rays too,
she's got no hips,
and that won't do."
So one, two, three,
and four, five, six,
seven, eight, nine, and ten,
we won't be back here again!
Now she's just normal,
average at best.
We'll just have to find something
that'll make her stand above the rest.

So that's what they did,
and to this day,
I'm asked why I didn't keep them,
and you know what I say?
I say I'm that I've got ten,
of each little kind,
cuz twelve of each still blows my mind!

Author's Note: I was born with 12 fingers and 12 toes. The extra fingers didn't function and were taken off within hours of my birth. The extra left baby toe was fully functional and I kept that one for a year. The extra right baby toe was taken off with the fingers. Yay!

hehe...I like this one. I remember the movie Gattaca from this poem. Where the guy playing the piano had that extra finger on both hands. You beat him out by a finger on each. Interesting in all of it. Excellent job. :)
