A True Lesson Learned

by Megan Langley

My chin rested on an upturned hand
while I gazed at the geometric shapes and equations
chalked on the blackboard.
I had no idea I’d learn the greatest lesson of my life here
in a creaky, wooden desk.
You are unique and valuable—
She reiterated this motto an infinite number of times throughout the school year;
we just sat there with confused expressions on our inexperienced faces,
wondering what the hell this had to do with geometry,
never realizing this one statement would be more useful
than understanding cosine or tangents.

Seven years later, I look back and give thanks
that we’re all special, all capable of offering ourselves to the world.
A simple, shy smile—a contribution we all can afford,
means much more to the heart of another human being
than a suitcase overflowing with hundred-dollar bills.
We all have the power to lift up the life of others because
we are all unique and valuable.
You are unique and valuable.

Author's Note: Some people don't realize how special they really are (a certain person inspired me to relay this true story of my 9th grade geometry class...*hugs* to you, you know who you are)
