Midnight and Raggedy Ann

by Mary Ellen Smith

In the middle of the night
Your face all smiles
Button eyes ever alert.

Sitting only half forgotten
Over there in the corner
Atop a pile of old blankets

I turn over in my bed
Moonlight traces your raggedy form
And very faint
So very faintly

I hear my childhood in your stitched heartbeat.

this is so poignant and wonderful. Especially the closing line! All our dolls seemed to have a magical (sometimes it scared me) feel of being able to see and be real, at night especially. And our imaginations carried them into much activity in our minds.

so simple, and yet so poignant. i love the last line. a very relatable subject, that pulls at the heartstrings of the little girl inside.

Just beautiful Mary Ellen. So terse and so true.Last line a killer.

This brought tears to my eyes, because it reminded me so much of how my Mother livingly restuffed and restitched my childhood kitty, Phoebe. She did this before she got too sick with Alzheimer's and had to go to a nursing home. Thank you for your wonderful poem.

This is absolutely wonderful. It brought me back memories of my own Suzy, who I believe is still at my dad and stepmother's. A wonderful tribute to those who were most little girls' first friends.
