i feel old

by Angela Thomas

i feel old. i mean, i feel like i'va aged, and not in my body
but in my days, like i've held onto you for so long, you were
my dreams, things i said i was going to accomplish, things
that i said i wanted to do, you were the pinacle. and then, like
the aged, i realized that this really was it and the same
way that an old man lets his dreams of being famous, or some old bag
lets her dreams of being a dancer fall from their wrinkled and weathered
hands, baby, i let you go. i let you fall out of my hands when i stopped
clutching you to my chest to keep on breathing. and like the old man
and the old bag, i feel empty and used and aged and everything that makes
you want to just sit down. but, thankfully, i am not old. i am not withered
nor am i past my prime, so maybe there is another dream for me to clasp
in my hands and breathe in for some time. but, it's just not you anymore
and that is why i feel old.

Author's Note: william, when will you learn to stop breaking my heart?
