First Light

by Leandra K Brossard

You are small and warm in a dark place.
You feel at peace, but wary.
Something has changed, sparking your awareness at last.
Your heart is touched by fear for the first time, but you are reassured.
Your mind and heart are an empty canvas, awaiting their first strokes.
You are content in the emptiness where you reside and you have known nothing else.
You feel a tug and then a terrible sense of aloneness overwhelms you.
You weep and find that you have eyes.
You cry out and find that you have voice.
Though you have no words to express yourself.

A sensation assails you.
Though you do not understand it, your body is cold.
Many more sensations follow the first.
Roughness of the earth and vegetation around you.
Air rippling curiously over your bare flesh.
Too many sounds to identify fill your ears.
Scents you do not understand fill your nose.

Slowly the darkness you have always known gives way.
Relentlessly pushed forth by the impending dawn.
Colors develop murkily as light seeps into the world.

A fragrant sigh of wind flows over all, content.
Where it passes minds blossom and lips find voice.
And the sky beams.. radiant and well-pleased.
