Glass Ghosts

by Max Bouillet

"These lovely lamps, these windows of the soul."
--Guillaume de Salluste Du Bartas (1544–1590)

Lenses from Grandfather's bifocals
were ground into sand.

Now they sift through a
perpetual glass prison
in an hourglass heirloom.

Upon death,
the living grind glass
and add vision to the timepiece
so the rest of the chain
can see glints of stray light
and insight from
ancient eyes
that flash into
young pupils.

Each contribution
lengthens time
as each old ghost
lends a hand
to the living.

Original and warm hearted. Better than an urn of ashes.

A beautiful tribute to your grandfather and to the Eternal Circle. A strong reminder of what came before us and how we pass it on to generations unborn.

i love the parallels of death and time, as the generations of a family pass from hand to hand. my, my, such a profound work, and oh, what a swell of a last stanza. i must catch my breath....

Much more endearing than an urn on a fireplace. I think this would be a great bequest to leave to a special loved one, has me thinking of the only affordable legacy for my grandson. Thanks for the lovely inspiration, Max. (good vibes sent in your direction)

There is so much contained in this little piece. I love the parallels between time and death, between seeing and ghosts. Beautiful work.
