Soledad

by Uriel Tovar

Que se puede decir de la soledad?
Que?
Maldita soledad;
                       Cuerpos frios en la arena
                       Sin lenguas u ojos
Sin forma de ser.

Que se puede decir del cuerpo?
Inutil extranjero
Un hombre sin pais
Escuchando palabras que no entiende
Amado--
Solamente por su cuerpo
Debil y acabado
           Mal nutrido:
Rey sin trono
Principe sin tierra.

En la oscuridad
Se ahogan las palabras
           Humanas
Derrotadas por oidos sordos
                       No saben el tiempo
                       Ni el lugar.

Estos son los dias sin sol
Estos son los tiempos
Amargosos y picantes
Consumiendo el fuego
Apagando la luz.

No hay historia--
Ya no hay voz
Escondida en el olvido
Y helada en el mar.

Pero esto es la soledad?

Yo soy la soledad
Yo soy el principe sin reino
Un simulacro de humanidad
Abandonado por el sol.

"Cold bodies in the sand Without languages or eyes, Without form to be. In the dark the Human words suffocate. These are the days without sun. These are the sharp Armageddon times; the consuming fire Extinguishing the light. There is no history -- No longer a voice Hidden in the forgetfulness and frost of the sea. But is this solitude? I am the solitude. I am a prince without a kingdom, a simulacrum of humanity Left by the sun." Fascinating read; I understand some Spanish, so it was interesting to read this and then try to translate it a bit.

Yes, thank you, Tom for giving us a clue as to the contents. I am sure this poem reads beautifully aloud. Sounds ominous!

Se fragua la soledad como con la muerte, y un sólo instante despues, anula toda existencia más no el ser que se apodera de ella. Esto entiendo de tu poema. Bravo y Bienvenido

So, I actually couldn't read most of it. But it made me rather angry that I couldn't. They dropped Spanish at my college and I was minoring in it. Then they brought it back and my schedule is full, so now I have to wait until next August before being in a class. But you sort of just gave me reason to start working on it by myself.
