Pre-Christmas Snow by Jane E PearceNow, comes the threat of snow,
another pre christmas storm
heralded by grey steel clouds
and absent crows that caw
the dawn awake- and I think
of the seventy some lit trees
with wishes wrapped underneath,
and the cats over the years
that used ornaments
for toys, then sleeping under
the old gas stove, waiting
for their place
by the table, to get handouts
from soft touches
bearing a piece of steaming turkey.
I think of our youngsters up
at four am, sneaking down to see
what magic lay beyond. Now,
their children wake them
at an ungodly hour ,
and on it goes-Christmas
love enclosed in bright paper,
passed from generation to generation,
but all the new sweaters, gameboys,
dolls, erector sets, jewelry,and money
from Grandma and Grandpa
can't measure up to the most
important thing we can give them-
unconditional love
unwrapped and raw, filling the air
that special day. You can taste it,
embrace it, and hold it tight forever.
.
Yes ,there's another pre-christmas snow
coming to cover all the gritty dust
of the passing year - a clean table cloth
for new memories.
