To Merula, A Plea

by Melina Raven Maness Diebold

Fairest Merula, damsel divine

her eyes, two azurine Loreleis

I gaze at her cassia lips

bitten red by her lover's blows

Standing demure with glistening tips

a savor that save but one man knows

Merula how can you so calmy deny

your looks, your love, and your lusts

from all those who try

With their fevered fingers

(where such lust lingers)

and their sweaty skin

(eager at the chance of sin)

To ply your heart and try your loins

To curry your favor

(to appease their groins)

Merula how can your virtue

hold so true

through all that others do

to get inside of you

I smile, your breath condenses on my face

as you peer straight into mine eyes

Oh, if only you could look and see past the glass

stare keenly through my soul (too much I fantasize!)

Your blindness to me and my affections

brings birth to so much pain

like some Psyche's sadistic doula

But alas my dearest and most inspiring Muse

it seems that I must concede

to be content with my life spent, as merely a mirror to Merula
