A String of Presents

by Kenneth Lau

Sometimes I just forget it all. I just forget the past, and live in the moment, like people so often say is a wise thing to do. Or to be more accurate, they say it is the road to happiness, leaving the past behind. Happiness is a fool's pursuit.

The present is so unrewarding, not to mention unvisionary. MY ego feeds on accomplishments, and moments are only half as powerful as the memories they create. The present says only that I am a college student studying music who is undisciplined enough to have time for self-reflection.

My eyes are brown. That's it. No twinkle, no character. No magic. Just brown ovals fighting the wind to reach a destination which has yet to meet with the present. THIS is what I AM. But what WAS I?

First, I was one cell, then two, then an infant in need of only food and love. Then I was a knowledge-hungry child unknowingly groomed for a life-long addiction. Next I was a young man fighting for the power to steer my own pat, meeting with only mild success.

The only good thing about the now is that I AM a man. No longer given a selection of choices for my life. I can creat my own. I AM a man. And I WILL be, well, unique.
