Mom: I got some green silk pajamas

by Lisa Marie Brodsky

Darling,
A package came for you today.
The UPS man hopped away in his big brown carriage
and I picked the box up with shaking hands.
This is not my house, after all, and I didn’t know
if it was my door to open.
But it was a package for me, this I know –
The green silk pajamas you bought for my
twentieth-i’m-a-woman birthday.
I blushed and counted the rug fibers last night when you
told me what you’d ordered:
Green silk pajamas for you to peel off me like a grape.
Mama doesn’t know her baby’s shedding her skin like a happy lizard
If she knew she’d send you to Siberia for sure.
