The Stolen Body Returns Home

by Lisa Marie Brodsky

Suddenly

upon feeling the power
of a body reclaimed,

I shuttle into it.

I stretch across your chest
like canvas
and stare down at you.

I am not stuck to the ceiling,
doomed to be an observer

a lonely shadow exorcised from my body.

I lay my full weight on you,
glide over you like a snake,
press myself into you
over you,
a lingering cloud.

You open your eyes in surprise.
“Is this you?” you ask
and I mouth,

“this is my body,
my wounded capsule
and no one will steal me away
again.”
