The Lists I Kept as a Child

by Lisa Marie Brodsky

are on my refrigerator.
I can’t keep the monsters out.
Some slide between
the panels of the fence.
Some hang
over the top
like ivy.
Some sit at the table
with my mother and watch
me write lists of what frightens me.
Mother reminds me to be wary
when I walk down the block

because in our front yard
are bodies crouched in the bushes.
Breath like a dog hanging over
my shoulder.

I see earwigs that
dip and plunge
through the dirt,
so fluid
they could weave through hair
unnoticed.
Cicadas circling with their
blinking wings.
Alligators. Komodo Dragons.

There are other creatures -
some are like jelly -
rancid creatures
that drip and ooze.

I lose count of how many
there are; this fence
is no barrier.
Each night I recite the list:

Boogie Man.
Great White Shark.
Men who raped my mother.

My God, this is powerful. Is it hallucinatory, or just symbolic? And then the ending hits you between the eyes. An amazing work. I began reading your stuff after seeing your post on the Brag Board. No wonder you're going to the Vermont Studio.... d:-)

Stark and startling, this packs a real punch. Incredible images, as well. Congrats on POTD!

Hi Lisa, Great write. This is so emotional, powerful. Indeed tragic what happen to you mother. Hope the men were caught. So scarcy for a child to go thru with her Mother.

I truly find this to be a great way to express the feeling. As being someone who has had this happen, it is a great fear that goes along with it, with no way to truly express the effect it has on one's mind.

This is really good- real or not. Great job. The ending had alot of bite- good job! I can understand why this was POTD!

I liked the varied and descriptive list. The last line is powerful, making the piece memorable.
