The Introduction

by Julie Adams

It was not a spark
that flew between
it was a comet!

Plummeting through the air
a fireball flew;
spitball from the gods.

Somehow it kissed my cheek
and burned, in chorus.

I stood like wax
melting in disbelief.

The eyes cemented in quicksand,
no rescuing vine—
Say your prayers and surrender!

We lept into the darkness;
wandered the jungles within.

We spoke through a mist; fog,
like smoke, swirling, mingling,
signaling to one another.

Overlapping breaths
panted between words
in the darkness, but

the fiery silence to follow
began to glow, surround us
hovering in the thicket
of time—

standing still.
The moment only broken by
the aftermath of a third-party introduction.
