Hardest of All Stones

by Amy Niggel

Tears were falling like diamonds
from saphire eyes
and all I could think was "damn"
I know I should have helped
should have appologized maybe
should have tried to ease the pain I'd caused
but I knew the tears were hers
not mine and I had washed my hands of her.
So I turned my back
my jade eyes closed and opened to onyx
and I walked out feeling the pearls of ruby blood
that dripped down my arms
and I knew then
that my heart was in fact the hardest of all stones.
