Epitome

by Traci Mabats

Someday I will be
glistening
a bronzed statue
unforgiving
Your testimony
of love and affection
given too late
to move me

Great use of etymology in the title here;

Epitome: Latin epitome, a summary, from Greek, an abridgment, from epitemnein, to cut short: epi-, epi- + temnein, to cut.
The title adds a great deal of understanding as to what went on to make the speaker "a bronzed statue/unforgiving," and in a (almost ironic) way, shows how the speaker is returning the favor to the one who caused it by becoming a statue (becoming immune to his cries and effectively "cutting him short"). A very eloquent way of saying "you cut me off, so now so are you." Your use of the word "testimony" is very effective: it recalls the image of Lady Justice (the bronze statue, unforgiving, and like the speaker blind to cries of love and affection), which resonates again with the "balancing of the scales" that the poem achieves by doing unto the subject what the subject has done to the speaker. So by becoming the statue here in this poem, the speaker not only gives an elegant description of what the subject's hurtful behavior did to her, but also explores how that very hurt turns around to affect the one who caused it to begin with--and all the while the image of Lady Justice, noble and suffering, stands over it. A very well balanced poem, great usage, great diction, great title, vivid descriptions while showing a respectable and effective amount of restraint. This is an excellent poem, Sharona. Thank you for sharing it! |m|
