The Darkness

by Megan Langley

Quickly untie the drapes
From the perfect knotted ribbons
Which hold them in their place.
Spread the fabric, silky,
Across the chilling panes of glass.
As I close my eyes, I forsee
The darkness approaching
Although, not quite so steadfastly.
Neither now being time for Spring
Nor summertime nor fall,
It will want to seek a haven,
Into here it shall slowly crawl.
Scaling the building side,
And seeping through the window sill
Where it will patiently reside.
Unbeknownst to neither
Me nor you -- we the oblivious,
Will quite possibly disappear.
The blackness -- which no sense
Detects -- quietly envelops
All within its reach, so immense.
Lying in the comfort
Of each other's arms, the warmth can
Not save us, love can not alert,
Nothing knows the dangers
Capable of darkness -- Because
It gently strangles, then lingers,
Don't ever have a doubt,
Never let it in, keep it out.
Out! Out! For God's Sake, keep it out!

Author's Note: Trying to play around with iambic trimeter & tetrameter (and rhyme)... only because I am reading Frost for class and he's into rhythm.
