What Has This Land Become?

by Madeline Pestolesi

Terrified at the prospect

Of tyranny's four more years

Of diminishing freedom,

I spoke with my single voice

Among others,

Only to find my rescue

Beaten down by the ignorant,

Torch-wielding masses.

And I lost my faith.

Faith in my country;

Faith in our system of government;

Faith in its citizens to recognize evil and stop it

From its power-crazed lunacy,

And its minimal grasp of the English language.

Full of fear,

I wonder how long

Until I can be proud of my country again.
