Speechless

by S. Pelham Flood

What’s one to think
when you stare in the eyes
of a wish—and silence
falls between the two of you.

The loss of words
from both pairs of lost
lips spurs a moment
of inner consideration.

“Ah, I’m so nervous,
I don’t know what to say
to him,” runs through one mind.
What runs through the other?

Obvious attraction makes
us to fear possible rejection,
perhaps causing hesitance
when forwardness is needed.

Is there such thing as too aggressive?
Is it possible to chase them away?
Is our mind so infatuated that we
project into them feelings we want to see?

But then what causes the two
pairs of passionate eyes to lock
onto one another? There is comfort
in this uncomfortable silence.

I really like this Steven. In my painfully shy world, I can relate. I am always searching for the eyes of that one special stranger and waiting for the silence to end. Still searching, still silent.

I especially like those last two lines. This seems to be about a positive speechlessness, and definitely I know that can occur, as opposed to a negative one at awkward moments, after endings, a sadder type. Well said.

Congratulations on POTD! Really cool take on the attraction and awkwardness of a situation. I am so glad they posted this for all of us to enjoy! Your photo looks like you are standing in front of one of my favorite art museums in San Jose, CA; but I see you are from NY... stay warm. stay safe. ~N

Absolutely wonderful in the sense of wonder and pondering of attraction and reactions... I love the beginning, the forthrightness of the question, as if spoken, and the original "stare in the eyes of a wish". The eyes and lips work wonderfully throughout, and yes, the ending "the comfort of uncomfortable silence" is brilliant.
