Before First Snow by Leonard M HawkesYellow leaves still clung
To roadside willows;
Wind darkly erratic,
Edged with chill;
Twilight gold hovered
Over western Promontories;
Evening sky solid--
Impending, impenetrable,
Unyieldingly Gray.
Yet Summer lingered:
Fleeting effervescence
Perceived internally:
Warmth sensed like Cold
Within the bone--
Retrospection bestial--
Whooping of crane,
Wild goose song of
Commemorate South.
Unimpeded, cowering
'Neath pendulant
Swaying branches,
Voice was breath--
Less than whisper--
Subtle enticement,
Hesitating, yet
Harmonizing inherently;
We sang Autumn's Song.
