Captain Hazelwood

by Deborah S Regan

Captain Hazelwood sat down in the diner,

Lifted his menu and ordered salmon

Captain Hazelwood experienced emotions

That Exxon couldn’t tell you about

The oil tankers sail over the ocean’s curve

And maroon themselves in straights

The moon recedes further from the earth

(It is God’s eye).

Author's Note: I personally blame Exxon more for the famous oil tanker disaster, but Captain Hazelwood's name evokes the tragedy more aptly.

Personalizing an historic tragedy. The ship's captain is directly responsible. How much Exxon may be responsible is more problematic.
