The Bridge

by Alison McKenzie

He stretched himself across time and evolution;
Time having nothing to do with who He is
Or why He loves us,
Evolution being the feeble process of explanation
By our simple human minds
Which cannot even begin to grasp the genius of
His handiwork.

He stretched Himself across the chasm we carved in sin,
Because He could not fathom BEING
Without us;
Because we could not forge our own way back;
Because no blood could cover the distance
Until He shed His own;
Until His own flesh was torn on account of us;
Until He endured the ultimate separation
As all sin occupied His flesh for that boundless moment,
And Jesus, the man, was abandoned by His own essence
So that we could live.

He built a bridge,
A bridge of flesh and bone,
Of blood,
Indestructible in ultimate victory!

God, how I love Him
Jesus!
My hero, my Savior,
The only One to whom I will ever bow.

Author's Note: Jesus' endurance of pain and suffering as He was persecuted those last hours is, yes, amazing. But even more amazing and unimaginable to me is the moment He took on all our sins. I know how horrible it feels when I suffer for my OWN mistakes. I cannot imagine suffering the feelings inside of ALL the mistakes and hurts of ALL humans...and THEN to have to be alone as His own spirit, that of our Heavenly Father, could not dwell there; to feel abandoned at that critical moment. I just cannot imagine enduring that, but He did...

Well, it didn't give me chills but I did manage to stagger away from the computer and collapse to my knees by the couch in tears to thank Him. What a zinger.
