How Does a Poem Get Written?

by Ronald A Pavellas

How does a poem get written? What comes first?:

”I will write a poem!” or,
As I am writing something I realize
”I am writing a poem, it seems.”

No, it is the first instance for me.

I often feel a bit lonesome for a new poem, but
Usually, I am in no mood or physical position for it.

Occasionally I find myself between the doing of things,
Typically waiting for others, or on the subway or bus,
And I say to myself ”Pav, you could be writing a poem,”
But I don’t.

Now I am between things, waiting for others
And I can write a poem now.
But -- will I?

No, it seems, I merely will have written
What I just wrote.
Is this a poem?
Does it matter what I call it?

I say:
Maybe,
No.

Pav!
Now stop asking and answering questions already,
And write a real poem …

Later.

Author's Note: Waiting for my wife and step-daughter at IKEA in Stockholm, nursing a cup of coffee that is so bad, according to Swedish standards, it could equal ordinary American coffee.
