velvet platforms

by Emily G Myers

Seems there's always a hill to climb
Always a goal to reach
Running out of time
Have to try to teach

A few hurdles to clear
One is authority
The veil is sheer
Between Mom and me

I'm left out sometimes
Because I'm not what she expects
But I haven't committed any crimes
At least that she detects

No velvet platforms for Emily
'They're too funky' she'll say
So I think I finally see
I'll be funkier than her any day
