for him

by Emily G Myers

*for S. on this good day

freezing
lying on the floor
trying to justify my hiatus
it's been a while since i've created
now you're asking me to start again
but i know from experience-
you can't just force words
they come and go as they please
so many times they've come
and i've been without a pen
i wonder how many poems have passed me by
because of my poor memory and lack of ink

but today was a good day for you
and a good day for you-
well, i suppose is a good day for me
i recall the many times you've acted as my muse
giving me elves and vodka and hemlock...
so you say to me:
'There's a shortage of poetry lately.
Will you write some for me to read?'

and here i am-
freezing
lying on the floor
trying to justify my hiatus
it's late and dark
and words aren't visiting
i keep begging one line from a song to inspire me
'I wish I had a river I could skate away on...'
and all i can say is:
'Yeah Joni. Me too.'
so maybe in *time*
i'll write you a poem to read
but for tonight...

you get a poem about not writing a poem
