pirate

by Emily G Myers

I can't get him away from me,
that pirate who chases after my heart
he says he loves me
he says I'm what he needs
but if I need him back,
he runs and leaves me behind

all the time I'm fooled,
tricked into loving a pirate
he sails over, canons covered
when I smile and wave,
he uncovers those guns
and blasts my ship to pieces

if I'm away, he's off kissing mermaids
if I turn my head, he's raiding my hard-earned loot
I have only faeries and lost boys,
though ardent warriors they are
and I can't complain too heartily,
since the Indian chief keeps an eye out

but I just can't get him away,
that pirate who chases after my heart
