examining ourselves

by Angela Cotterman

this is the age
that cancer begins
in the breasts of friends
benign
we hope
the edges too rough
the lump too large
we are twenty-five
and twenty-seven
and older, younger
finding cancer
in our breasts
or lumps
that are benign
mostly
but we have grown
up
scared

Yes, the fear of the fear, more cancerous but so universal.
