backyard

by Emily G Myers

I wish I could have captured the moments
the brown leaves swishing with the motion of your feet
the stream that soaked and froze your toes
and we could not stop laughing about nothing in particular
the way we used to play in my backyard
I never realized at the time
but those are moments I can never recover
they're lost in the mounds of fallen leaves
in the coldness of the water we were drawn to
and I'll never forget the way you smiled for no reason
and the moon will never be the same
because of the tiny faerie children we used to be
and the grass still holds the imprints of our feet
