I am the Mermaid

by Mary Ellen Smith

I am the mermaid.
Find me naked underneath the sun.
Ah, but I am not the only one.
Hidden deep below the sea
Wait many more like me.

I am the mermaid.
Jealous of the warm dry land.
Tired of the endless sand.
Your soft green grass would be my death
Would break my heart and take my breath.

I am the mermaid.
My silken illusive siren like song
Mere man cannot resist for long.
Seaweed, sand, pearls and shell.
You’ll find me midst the ocean’s swell.

I am the mermaid.
Beware the storm wherein I swim
My plan for man I fear is grim.
Regard my folklore with renown
Lest tis you the green eyed mermaid drown.

This vivid description of the mermaid not so complimentary! Symbol of the sea which indeed has beckoned many a man to an untimely death.
