Ferry Watch

by Amy Niggel

The cool wind moved through her hair
as she was leaning over the rail
studying with equal intrest
the deep rippling waters
and her own skewed reflection
and the moon seemed to be reaching toward her on the lake
twisting its fingers in the water
stirring it up
begging her to come closer
to bathe in both the cool water
and the silver light.
She doesn't notice the moon's longing
she is lost in her own thoughts
of the love she left behind
and the future she moves on to.
It seems she's cried enough tears to fill this lake
and the moon serves only as a reminder of all she gave up.
The wind kicks up again
as she pulls her jacket tightly around her,
wishing it was his arms instead.
The wind blows her hair in gentle streams around her face
and she looks so beautiful
for the first time I see what he saw in her all along
and in the moonlight even she looks gentle
so I forgive her the infinite sin of breaking so fragile a heart
and as I watch the ripples in the placid lake
I can't help but wonder if it is the begining of a fall storm
or simply the tears of a long coming regret.

in the lake it would seem you have found your muse. marvellously evocative. i'm glad you're writing.
