Bluebird Dreaming

by Mary Ellen Smith

A bluebird sat on my window sill
She sat and chirped at me until
A little breeze caught up her wing
With all that cool fall breezes bring.
At once then in a pale blue blur
She signaled to others where we were,
And we were joined to my delight
By other bluebirds there in flight.

I fed to them some crumbs of bread
And can’t remember what I said
But must have been fine conversation
To merit their bird concentration.
Their little heads bobbed up and down
As they ate the bread and looked around.
I counted two, then three then four
Five and six and then four more.

I turned to get a bit more bread
Only momentarily turned my head,
And in that moment they were gone.
Bluebird majesty withdrawn.
I didn’t see them fly away
That quiet simple Autumn day.
It made me stop and begin to muse
If I had even seen those blues.

I leave my window open now
Hoping that they’ll return somehow
That I might recreate that scene
That wondrous feathery bluebird dream.
Some bread crumbs there that they can find
And perhaps if they don’t mind
We’ll pass the time most amiably
My little bluebird friends and me.

Excellent morning fare. This would be a nice way to spend a fall day.

A whimsical, sentimental, and charming narrative poem.
