Mark of Tantalus

by T.J. Carver

I, burning for the water,
have to wonder what I'm after;
and if I quench my one desire,
what more shall I then require?

My lips are raw, always bleeding

If I triumph in my drinking,
will the thirst remain and strengthen?
Will I drown in the tidal pull?

Or surface?

~Dedicated to E.R.E.

Author's Note: After conferring with the person to whom this was originally dedicating, she feels that this poem was always complete. Tantalus' plight was never ending, so why should the poem have an actual resolution?
