Saying Goodbye

by Mike Loftis

The room is quiet
except for the moth
fluttering about the light
I'm here to say goodbye
Neither of us speak
I am too consumed with grief
and you
the victim of more than you could bear
lie silent
with your hands crossed upon your chest
I wrote a poem
"Angels in the Snow"
I place it next to your heart
and weep
I question my own mortality
I ponder life
and death
then I kiss you for the last time
I want to say "I love you"
but cannot speak
I turn and leave you alone
except for the moth
fluttering about the light

Full of sad feelings for the one who leaves us once and for all leaving behind assoiations which shall remain alive.

*sigh* too touching to even comment more...

Poignant! Grief pours from these lines. Saying goodbye can be most difficult standing by a casket.

the moth metaphor is especially touching
introspection that wishes to be dialogue - an intimately detached & moving piece of writing

Oh. oh. A reply will come in the tender touch of the wind, in a quiet moment alone, when the sun touches the horizon after a long night, and there will be a lifting from the lake of grief in one soft, gentle motion. Until then, kind thoughts and love.

Life is so precious ... Love is so breath taking ... and memories last for an eternity ... Mike, your words are a treasure!

This is too touching. It surely draws at my painful heart. Well done.

An absolutely stunning piece of work. Saying goodbye isn't easy, but sometimes that's all we can say. I feel your grief; your pain and your love. 'nuff said- great piece on a sad topic
