Reunion Time by James ZealyA Gathering of friends and classmates
Reminders of times pleasant and strained
Together discussing the past
Defining times both real and unreal
Times change, people age
Internal confusion reigns
People the same yet different
Our lives paths begin to unfold
Apprehension, unease, joy all rolled up inside
Relaxed nothing left to hide.
We came, we survived, we listened
Those important come and go
Relaxed at last reflections of good times shared
Amid strains of music from dances long ago
The eyes close, time retreats
Our youth lost but relived, tears flow
A small smile, memories flooding
Young loves won and lost
Victories and pain merge blurring our past
Reality pushes the fantasy aside
Memories of the past subside
The euphoria regained abates
The event the gathering slows
Just another memory stored
Awaiting a new awakening.

Author's Note: Written just before My wife's 30th high school reunion. Its interesting, you can go home and reflect, on those angst filled days of our youth, but do we really want to be there again?

Memories of the past subside', yes, but do they ever die? Associations survive so far the external associatedness is alive. Kill the associations, the memories will subside.

Posted by Clara Mae Gregory on 09/13/09 at 03:42 PM It is weird but Terry's recent general forum post on hate/love highschool, brought back memory of this poem. I guess I am reflecting back, preferring to remember the good times and friends while flushing all the rest. It is a great poem reflecting the mood. :) |
Posted by Clara Mae Gregory on 09/13/09 at 03:46 PM Oh, I almost forgot, despite the fact that I left high school a year early, I was still invited to the class reunions. I only attended one about 10 years ago. I had a good time, but have never desired to attend another GHS class reunion. Whatever the need was, it must have been filled. It is way more meaningful to me to just stay connected to my old friends such as you and know they care about me.
