Breaking Rules (Never told till Now)

by Deanna M Gritsonis

The night we broke the rules
When I saw you turn the corner
I felt 17
Looking into your eyes like the first time
Nervous to see that deep
Knowing then I’d break the rules

Dinner and talking
Looking in wonder at what we had become
Never nervous…
Unless we stared too long
Couldn’t really eat
Like a first date
Realizing what I had missed

Back to that room
A place we knew well
When you first came back for me
So long ago it has seemed
Unsure of what would happen
Alone no one even to know

We lay close together
Just feeling our souls touch
Something we had missed

I felt you again
Whole and sold
My body wanted
Just warmth
Just you…

I wanted to stay forever
Breaking the rules due to love
Never told anyone
How could I
Kept it inside
Tried to hide it in my eyes

It’s safe now…
Or maybe I just don’t care now
For that night I broke the rules
Slept in your arms
Swimming in love
Something I had lost till then
I kept it inside
Buying my time till it all ended
Till we could start over
With no rules but love
