Saturn Eating His Children by Bruce W Niedt
(after Goya)
Crazed, the whites of his eyes
are wild as crescent moons,
his beard and hair, ravaged forests.
His maw, an open shriek, devours
the flesh of his flesh,
clutching a naked body
in a vise-grip.
His terrible teeth rip
the already headless, bloody torso.
He does this to keep his children
from fulfilling a prophecy
and usurping the throne.
Back on Earth, the mortals turn
gymnasiums to abbattoirs,
busses to infernos.
Retribution becomes
the snake that eats itself,
and they all spiral down
into a mouth of madness,
torn apart by hatredÂ’s teeth,
taking the children with them.
