My Stalker

by Mary Ellen Smith

In the glass, she’s standing there. She looks at my reflection.
She studies me, looks in my eyes. A critical inspection.
Her face is gently wrinkled. More smile lines than frowns.
Perhaps an indication of life’s little ups and downs.

She makes a funny face at me. She winks, I wink, she nods her head.
In jest she blows a little kiss, pursed lips of painted lipstick red.
I raise my hand to touch the mirror, its surface smooth and cold.
And she in turn does the same; we both wear a ring of gold.

I turn a bit and turn right back, one eyebrow up then two
She is quick to mimic me and move the way I do.
Perhaps if I just step away, I lean against the wall.
And slowly peek into the mirror; she won’t be there at all.

But alas, she’s right back to it, this imposter of my face
And what I see then must be me, with no chance to erase.
The years go by as life goes on and hair it turns to grey
And yes a few more wrinkles for her and I have come our way.

But looking back I remember she was with me all along.
Avoiding her gaze now won’t do, I know that would be wrong.
What I see now might be different than all those years ago,
And once in awhile I might not recognize that face I know.

No matter where the mirror is, as a few more years go by,
I’m sure that I will see her smile, I’m sure I’ll see her cry.
Steadfastly she will stalk me; face to face she’ll be right there
After all these years she and I, an inseparable pair.

Superb writing. I think many will read and relate to this piece.

What great rythym and rhyme to this and it surely is a message we can all relate to. Let's hope that that stalker has many more smiles than tears and for many, many more years. Superbly done!

This is fun! A different way to look at the aging process! Reminds me that as a teacher I had my picture taken each year when my class did. After while I could see the changes plainly and I stopped having it taken every year! The documentation too telling! LOL!
